Ferran is today the drinks director at elBullifoundation were he leads beverages department at Bullipedia. He is the Spanish specialist for Jancis Robinson and in 2016 published his first book on food and wine pairing named ¿Qué vino con este Pato?. Ferran has recently organized “Brain and Wine” the first international congress on neuroscience and wine tasting.
Ferran Centelles was born in Barcelona in 1981 but he did not get interested into wine until he was 17, nobody in their family had any serious connection with wine (a part of a 1 hectare of vines that his grandfather used to cultivated time ago that was carried to a local cooperative in Castellón). Ferran discovered wine through restaurants, and still remembers the first aroma that he was able to recognize inside a glass of wine (rose petals aromas in a bottle of Muscat from Penedès). His first academic steps were made in cookery schools (Joviat and Cett) and winemaking Schools (Escola Mercè Rossell i Domènech). At that time Ferran started as a stagier at elBulli restaurant during summer times and he has spent there the major part of his professional career (13 years within the sommelier team). The fact elBulli was close for six month per year permitted Ferran to travel around and to develop himself mainly in London (where he achieved WSET Diploma) and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He was awarded Best Sommelier in Spain in 2006 (Ruinart) and National Gastronomy Award in 2011. He started to teach about wine at the age of 23, and although he recognizes that it was probably too early he gained a lot of experience that continues to use now as part of Outlook Wine (The Barcelona Wine School) team. Ferran is a regular taster in the Decanter World Wine Awards among other international wine competitions.
