My name is Marcos Flores Tlapan, pleople in the industry call me SOMM Marc. I start in this bussines in 1993 working at the JW Marriott hotel, and I worked in many different restaurants like Le Cirque, L’Alsace a Paris, Michael Mina,et. During the last 18 years, I also worked as a instructor and mentor of Sommeliers in Mexico since 2003, I won three times the contest Best Sommelier of México 2005, 2007 and 2010 the best of the best champions. I represented México in 2009 in Best Sommelier of America’s and 2010 in the Best Sommelier of the World in 2010. I been traveling around the world to the main regions of wine, expos like Vinexpo, Vinitaly, Prowein, etc. Nowadays I’m in charge of the Mexican Sommelier Association and part of the didactic commission of the ASI and Jury of the best sommelier of the World 2016 and Continental contest in America, Asia – Oceania and Europe. Finally I’ve been helping in the logistics of the national contest in countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Domenican Republic and Perú


What excites you about the Sommelier industry/community?

For me is a lifestyle, it’s one of the most important things in my life, meet people around the world to share our culture, knowledge about wines, Gastronomie, etc. Since 2009 I’ve been working with the Asscociation very close with the ASI and I met very exiting people

Why does continuous education in the wine industry matter to you?

For me wine is my first passion, I’ve been traveling around the world learning about wines, talking with the winemakers, owners and people in the industry, trying to understand what is all about, and to understand wines one of my passion is to talk about terroir
